The Mystery of the Flowerpot Digger in the Nighttime

Friday morning when I opened the blinds to the balcony, I saw that something had been digging in my flowers. It’s kind of hard to tell from the picture but there was a pretty deep hole in the middle, and one of the plants had been tossed out onto the floor. Sure, I’m in the woods, but I’m also on the third floor! I really didn’t think the birds would be quite so destructive. So what creature did a flying trapeze onto my balcony? It didn’t seem like any of the plants had been eaten so I really don’t know what happened.

I can almost guarantee it is a chipmunk but could also be a squirrel they dig in my pots all the time! Happened when we lived in apts before too. Spray a little tabasco and water mixture on the side of the pot or put foil over the dirt for a few weeks until they learn, some will figure it out and throw the foil out.

Could be the work of a cat… any possibility of a kitty visitor from another balcony? My cats would do something like that. But, like Daisymeg said, a chipmunk or squirrel sounds reasonable, too.
