A Bee Problem

June 28, 2009 · 5 Comments

Yesterday it came to my attention that there were bees swarming on my hummingbird feeder. I decided to wait til after dark when they would have gone back to the hive, and take it down for a few days. But when I went outside last night, there were several bees inside the glass bottle, and some of them were still alive. I wasn’t too interested in bringing entrapped and probably angry bees inside, so I just left it. Today of course there are more bees on the outside of the feeder. I was telling a friend about the problem over lunch this afternoon, and a waitress overheard and said she’d had the same problem, and told me her solution. She said she found this on the internet. Fill a ziploc bag with water and hang it from a string. It’s supposed to mess with their vision and they don’t like it and they won’t come back. Supposed to work with flies too. Well I put a bag out there but so far it’s not working. I also lit a candle and set it on the railing underneath the feeder, hoping to smoke them out. That’s not working either!

I did an internet search of my own and it seems like the best solution is to move the feeder. That, and buy a new feeder that is wasp- and bee-proof.

Maybe I should hang a baggie of water by my front door, it is always open with Tony in and out of the house, and the flies are driving me nuts.

WD-40? Doesn’t it work on everything? Dryer sheets? All of that, and also, bee- and wasp-proof feeder, as you say. :)

get a new feeder for the birds, bees are endangered so don’t hurt them with any chemicals….. don’t get stung either! :)

Just don’t kill the bees… They’re dying off on their own, and we don’t know why!
